Italy clashes: What we know about Milan and other city protests
Violent clashes erupted in Milan and other Italian cities on Saturday, October 17, during protests against the rising cost of living, with groups of youths attacking police and damaging property. The unrest left dozens injured and over 60 people detained in Milan alone. The violence began shortly after the demonstration started, with protesters throwing bottles and stones at officers, who responded with tear gas and water cannons. Rioters set fire to dumpsters and a chemical toilet, smashed shop windows, and damaged a Carabinieri vehicle, while many of the young participants wore masks. The protests were organized by the "Italia in Piazza" movement, which mobilized youths via social media, including TikTok. Police reported that many of those involved were minors, some from immigrant backgrounds, and arrests were also made in Turin and Bologna, where similar clashes occurred.
