SpaceX raises $40 billion in debt for AI chip purchases
Elon Musk announced Sunday on X that SpaceX has raised $40 billion in debt to fund purchases of new artificial intelligence chips, marking a major investment in AI infrastructure. The financing is primarily repayable debt for GPU purchases arriving in the first and second quarters, Musk said in response to an investor, without disclosing the maturity or interest rate. The aerospace group, which merged with xAI earlier this year, reported its first net profit in the third quarter, boosted by renting data center capacity to external clients like Anthropic. SpaceX had announced plans to invest $35-40 billion in the final quarter of this year, but this funding targets early 2027, signaling continued high investment levels. The company is also expanding its Colossus II data center and Musk aims to absorb Tesla into the conglomerate.
