Anthropic's path from AI startup to landmark IPO
Anthropic filed for its U.S. IPO on Monday, moving closer to becoming the first frontier AI lab to go public, while projecting 2028 revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion. The company has raised billions from Amazon and Google. Founded in May 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic raised $124 million in Series A funding and released its Claude model in March 2023. Major investments included up to $4 billion from Amazon in September 2023 and $2 billion from Google in October 2023, with valuation reaching $965 billion by May 2026. The company faces legal challenges, including a $1.5 billion settlement over author copyright claims and a music publisher lawsuit. It plans one of the largest IPOs ever as a public benefit corporation, though some investors are weighing a lower valuation after recent financial disclosures.
