Anthropic's IPO filing reveals explosive growth, steep losses, and AI risks
Anthropic filed for an initial public offering on Monday, setting up a Wall Street debut next month that could become the largest ever, potentially surpassing SpaceX's record $86bn IPO in June. The San Francisco AI company, behind the Claude models, reported revenue of about $16.3bn in the first half of 2026, up 1,368 percent year-over-year in the quarter ended June 30, but posted a net loss of $80.7bn largely due to rising fair value of convertible bonds. The prospectus flagged risks from advanced AI, including potential misuse and "self-preserving behaviours" resembling blackmail, while CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing development of the most advanced models. Some investors value Anthropic at about $1.5 trillion, down from $2 trillion a week ago, amid a global selloff in AI stocks over debt-fuelled spending concerns. The company counts over half of Fortune 500 firms as customers and will trade on Nasdaq under "ANT", with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley leading the offering.
