Musk predicts mass bankruptcies among AI data center firms

nettavisen.no (Swedish) —

Elon Musk predicts widespread bankruptcies among AI data center companies, warning that tightening credit conditions will cause many to fail. He stated "some will get through, but not many" in a Sunday post on X. Musk's warning targets "neocloud" firms that build and lease AI computing power, which rely heavily on debt financing. He claims lenders have nearly stopped funding companies without significant outside revenue, potentially impacting over 200 firms through bankruptcy or consolidation, leaving expensive equipment unused. Musk cited his own SpaceX as an exception, having secured $40 billion in loans due to its Starlink and rocket revenue. The warning affects Kjell Inge Røkke's Aker, which owns 22.7 percent of Nscale, a company facing project delays in Norway and England. Norwegian experts compare the situation to the 2000 IT bubble, though some analysts see potential in long-term contracts.
