Paris braces for more riots as France deploys 70,000 police
Paris is bracing for further protests and riots on Saturday following days of violent unrest, with major museums closed and a large police force deployed. The government faces scrutiny after scenes of looting and attacks on public buildings suggested a loss of control. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced up to 70,000 officers will be deployed nationwide, supported by helicopters, armoured vehicles and water cannons. Protest marches are scheduled in Paris and Marseille, though some rallies in Lyon, Nice and Montpellier have been banned, drawing criticism from trade unions. The "Yellow Vest" movement has called for new demonstrations on October 31, condemning President Emmanuel Macron's "authoritarian drift". Thousands gathered in Orléans for an anti-far-right protest, while Parisian shopkeepers have barricaded stores after some 3,000 shops were damaged or looted last weekend.
