Madrid protesters defend public pensions ahead of Spanish elections
Thousands protested in central Madrid on Saturday, October 24, 2026, defending public pensions, one month before Spain's legislative elections. The left accuses the right of seeking to enable partial privatization of the pension system. The march covered about two kilometers without incidents, from Atocha station to Alcalá Street, passing the Prado Museum and Cibeles Square. Government delegation estimated 25,000 participants, with banners reading "guaranteed pensions" and "protect pensions." Opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said Monday the Popular Party would adjust pensions by law if it wins the November 29 elections, responding to Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's accusations. The PP voted against the inflation-linked adjustment mechanism in 2021, citing excessive public costs. Average pensions reached 1,576 euros monthly in September, benefiting 6.8 million people.
