Brussels shopkeepers board up storefronts ahead of Saturday protest, fearing looting
Brussels shopkeepers are boarding up storefronts ahead of Saturday's planned demonstration, fearing looting and pillaging in the city center. The protective measures follow previous incidents during protests on October 9 and 17. Nearly all stores on Rue Neuve have installed wooden panels, including major brands like H&M, Uniqlo, and Lego, following the example of Nike and JD, which were previously looted. Calls for looting are reportedly circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms. Shop manager Julie at Hunkemöller said the situation is "particularly sad" but necessary for safety, adding "we have no choice." She has hired extra security guards for day and night protection, with other branches also receiving enhanced security measures.
