Italy deploys new laws, intelligence, and troops ahead of possible weekend unrest
Italy is preparing for a potential new weekend of unrest with a three-pronged strategy: new security laws, intelligence operations, and military deployment. The government has activated preventive measures ahead of possible protests today in cities across the country. The new security decree, now fully in force, introduces preventive detention for minors under 18 and in crowded places, a new crime of organized violence at public demonstrations, and direct fines of 500 to 1000 euros for parents of offending minors. Intelligence agencies are monitoring social media, conducting raids in 18 cities, and seizing weapons to counter potential external interference. The Public Security Department has deployed 5,800 agents nationwide, with 500 paratroopers and 1,000 police officers in Milan alone. Drones will provide aerial surveillance, while some shops plan to remain open despite preventive measures like wooden panels and lowered shutters.
