France braces for new protests amid heavy police deployment
France faces a new day of protests against high living costs and student conditions, under heavy police surveillance, following last week's violent riots and looting. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has deployed 70,000 security forces, including elite units, and vowed to be "intractable" with troublemakers. Authorities banned the CGT's planned Paris route from Bastille to Nation, offering an alternative from Porte d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes. In Orléans, about 11,000 people demonstrated against the National Rally party's congress, while a curfew for minors under 15 was announced for the next two nights. Police have seized dangerous objects, including firework mortars, in Île-de-France since Friday. The administrative court upheld the Paris route change, and organizers now call for a 14:00 gathering at Porte d'Italie.
