France mobilizes 70,000 security forces for second protest weekend
France is mobilizing 70,000 police and gendarmes for Saturday's second round of protests, 10,000 more than last week, following violent clashes that marked the October 17 demonstrations. Only union-organized marches have been authorized, a decision announced by President Emmanuel Macron. Paris museums including the Louvre and Orsay will close, and several Ligue 1 and 2 football matches have been postponed. The Yellow Vests' separate Paris march was banned. Last Saturday's protests drew up to 800,000 people, with roughly 2,400 detained and 500 arrested. Violence included a burned town hall in Limoges, damaged tourism offices, and about 3,000 vandalized shops. President Macron met student representatives Friday, who pledged to protest regardless.
