Ukrainian Bonds Rally After Democrats Win US Congress
Ukrainian dollar-denominated government bonds surged in price after the Democratic Party's victory in the US midterm elections, as investors anticipate stronger American support for Kyiv. According to Bloomberg, Ukraine's 4.5% bonds maturing in 2034 rose over one cent, exceeding 63 cents per dollar of face value, the highest level in over a month. The gains were among the strongest in emerging markets on November 4, driven by expectations that Democrats will prevent cuts to US military and financial aid. Aberdeen Investments' Victor Szabo noted that recent Ukraine news had been negative due to strikes on energy infrastructure, but Democrats may ensure continued intelligence sharing and access to Starshield satellites. The election outcome could also affect peace talks, with US officials set to meet Ukrainian and European delegations in Brussels ahead of negotiations in Abu Dhabi. President Donald Trump's stance remains uncertain, with Capital Economics' Neil Shearing suggesting that Republican losses might push Trump toward a more active foreign policy, potentially accelerating a settlement favorable to Moscow.
