Can the US Navy clear the Strait of Hormuz against Iran's mine tactics?
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical challenge for naval forces due to Iran's sea-mining tactics, a threat demonstrated by the 1987 Bridgeton incident and renewed in 2026 with at least a dozen mines detected in the waterway. US intelligence identified Iranian-made Maham 3 and Maham 7 mines, which use acoustic and magnetic sensors to target ships without contact. Even a limited number of mines forces commercial traffic to slow, reroute, or await clearance, disrupting oil and gas shipments through this vital route. The US has decommissioned older mine-countermeasure ships, relying on newer systems like unmanned equipment and helicopters, while Britain has committed £115 million for mine-hunting drones. Iran's strategy shows a small minefield can still challenge a superior navy.
