Iran Proposes 48-Hour Hormuz Reopening as Trump Cites Progress
Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours if Washington meets its conditions, a potential breakthrough in talks to end the war, with both sides warning renewed fighting could spread regionally. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Qatari mediators helped shorten Tehran's seven-day reopening proposal, with the US taking steps on day one and shipping resuming on day two. President Donald Trump said negotiations were "going well" and Iran wanted a deal, though he repeated threats against Iranian nuclear facilities. Tehran's demands include sanctions relief, release of frozen funds, restoration of oil waivers, recognition of an Oman-designated shipping route, reduced US military presence, and an end to attacks on Lebanon. A tanker caught fire after hitting mines east of Hormuz, and US Central Command said the blockade has diverted 144 commercial ships.
