North Korea Rejects FBI Claims of Binance Crypto Theft

faz.net (German) —

North Korea has rejected FBI accusations that it was behind the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, calling the claims a "serious political provocation." The FBI alleges North Korea stole $6.3 billion from the Binance exchange. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed the FBI's statement as "absurd rhetoric" via state media. The FBI attributes the attack to the hacker group TraderTraitor, which is linked to Pyongyang's intelligence service. Binance announced the hack on Thursday and temporarily suspended withdrawals. The denial aims to keep channels open for laundering cryptocurrency, according to expert Michael Bosack. UN reports from 2024 say North Korean cyberattack proceeds have helped finance weapons of mass destruction development. TraderTraitor is also blamed for a $1.5 billion theft from the Bybit exchange in February 2025.
