Iran weighs two-day plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US meets demands
Iran is considering a two-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US agrees to its demands, according to Iranian officials. The proposal is tied to the lifting of a US naval blockade and other unspecified conditions. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said contacts with the US continue via mediators, but that "everything depends" on Washington's actions and acceptance of Iran's demands. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said Iran is cooperating with Qatar on a peace plan, without direct US negotiations. The US maintains a naval blockade in the Persian Gulf in response to Iran's restrictions on Hormuz traffic and has tightened sanctions, while threatening new attacks. Iran previously proposed a seven-day reopening plan under certain conditions, and former President Trump has reacted strongly to reports he might accommodate Tehran.
