Student loses hand during protest at French school in Lens
A 15-year-old student had a hand amputated during student protests in Lens, northern France, on Monday, according to authorities and the school. The teenager's life is not in danger. The prosecutor of Béthune confirmed the injury occurred during a morning gathering of 200 to 250 students outside the Auguste Béhal institute, where objects such as stones and fireworks were thrown at police. A republican security company was deployed, and the school has switched to distance learning. The police inspectorate (IGPN) is investigating the incident, which occurred as protests affected 413 schools nationwide. Demonstrations since mid-September demand more substitute teachers and better conditions, with 24 establishments damaged and 78 staff injured.
