France to close up to 500 high schools after student riots

bluewin.ch (Italian) —

France's education minister said 400 to 500 high schools will be partially or fully closed tomorrow following a week of clashes between riot police and students. Lessons will be "totally or partially suspended" due to unrest, said Edouard Geffray, adding that 24 schools have been "burned or looted" since the movement began. At least 5,000 people, mainly teenagers, have been arrested, with dozens injured. The school situation has become a central political debate in France amid nationwide protests over classroom conditions. Unions have called for teachers to strike, with further protests planned for Tuesday.
