French police arrest teen for gasoline attack on teacher during protests
A 16-year-old has been arrested in France for allegedly dousing a teacher with gasoline and kicking him during a student protest outside a high school in La Ciotat, near Marseille. The teacher, Thierry Laurent, suffered eye burns with an eight-day medical prognosis. The suspect, a student at the same school, is in custody facing an investigation for aggravated violence with a weapon and concealment of identity. Laurent was trying to extinguish a fire set by students when he was sprayed with fuel, an incident captured on video and shared on social media. Protests have led to around 5,000 police detentions, 24 schools burned or damaged, and 78 staff injured. Classes will be suspended Monday in 400-500 high schools due to security concerns, with a partial and gradual resumption planned.
