French student protests: 5,060 held in custody, most of them minors

lavoixdunord.fr (French) —

French authorities have recorded 5,060 police custody detentions since the start of high school student protests, with a large majority of those detained being minors, according to Education Minister Édouard Geffray. The minister also reported that 190 students have been injured during the unrest. On Monday, a 15-year-old lost a hand in Lens during a protest near his school's blockade. Classes are fully or partially suspended in 400 to 500 of the country's 3,700 high schools, with 17 schools remaining closed in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions. Students are demanding more resources for their schools, citing unsanitary buildings, overcrowded classes, unsubstituted teacher absences, and inequalities from the Parcoursup admissions system. The student union has promised an "Act III" on Tuesday, while authorities say the movement has shifted toward "urban violence."
