French PM orders schools to reopen Monday where safe, unveils five-point plan
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ordered schools to resume classes Monday wherever security conditions allow, responding to ongoing student blockades with a five-point action plan. The directive, sent Sunday to Education Minister Edouard Geffray and six others, pairs firmness against violence with addressing student concerns. Five workstreams emerged from academic councils, with initial decisions expected by month's end, including priority replacement of absent teachers and a Tuesday meeting on school renovations. Students demand more education funding, citing Parcoursup pressure, unreplaced teachers, dilapidated buildings, and heavy schedules. Lecornu also requested health service improvements, Parcoursup proposals by late October, and visible responses to student voices. The 2027 budget includes €1.2 billion extra for education.
