Hundreds of French high schools closed as students protest poor conditions
Between 400 and 500 French high schools, and some middle schools, are closed Monday out of 3,700 total, as student mobilization against deteriorating teaching conditions continues ahead of major protests planned Tuesday. The government is calling for firmness, with spokesperson Maud Bregeon stating on CNews that restoring order is the priority, while distinguishing legitimate peaceful protests from urban violence. New clashes were reported Monday in Paris, Lille, and Toulouse. Left-wing leaders and CGT chief Sophie Binet criticized the government's repressive response, with Binet confirming union members will join Tuesday's marches to protect students. Students demand action on overcrowded classes, teacher shortages, and dilapidated buildings, while around 5,000 people have been arrested in the past week.
