France: Over 400 Schools Stay Closed as Student Protests Spread

ru.euronews.com (Russian) —

More than 400 French schools will remain closed on Monday due to mass student protests, as the government says it cannot guarantee safety in educational institutions. Over two dozen schools were burned or looted last week during unrest. Since protests began last Monday, 170 students and 78 education staff have been injured, with over 5,000 people detained, mostly minors. High school students are protesting against education budget cuts, teacher shortages, longer school days, poor classroom equipment, and deteriorating sanitary conditions in buildings. The protests started in Paris suburbs with support from far-left political forces and spread nationwide, sometimes turning violent. New major demonstrations are planned for Tuesday, with teacher and student unions also condemning what they call excessive police actions.
