Belgian schools in Liège and Hainaut tighten security after student protests
Schools in Liège and Hainaut, Belgium, will implement reinforced security measures on Monday following last week's student protests marked by significant incidents in Liège. Police presence will be increased to prevent further unrest and protect students. Specific measures include additional police patrols, keeping classroom windows closed to prevent injuries from thrown stones, and restricting student movement during lunch breaks. In Hainaut, classes will start at 10 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., with reinforced police rounds and hourly situation assessments by provincial school staff. Federation Wallonia-Brussels Minister-President Elisabeth Degryse attributed the anger to an accumulation of factors, including confusion with measures taken in France. She called for dialogue over violence, emphasizing that schools are the proper place for debate and urging calm.
