Salvini and Musk cheer AfD's Saxony win, but Tajani calls it a blow to liberal values

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and other right-wing figures celebrated the far-right AfD's victory in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election, while Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called it a "bad news" and a threat to liberal values. Elon Musk also praised the result on X. Salvini, leader of the League party, called the AfD's win a "sensational success" proving "another Europe is possible," and sent congratulations to AfD co-leader Alice Weidel. Roberto Vannacci of Future National also celebrated, while Tajani, of Forza Italia, distanced himself, saying the AfD is "antithetical to liberal and Western values." Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remained silent on the matter. The AfD won with 43.8% of the vote, far ahead of the CDU's 17.2%, but fell short of an absolute majority. Protests against the party occurred in several German cities, and the Central Council of Jews in Germany expressed horror at the result, citing the party's far-right platform.
