AfD's Win in Saxony-Anhalt: A Call for Peace

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8% of the vote, a result its leader Ulrich Siegmund called a clear mandate for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine. Siegmund argued voters do not want Germany drawn into the conflict or to send billions in aid to Ukraine, which he claims only prolongs suffering. He called for negotiations and stressed the importance of good relations with Russia, alongside other nations. Foreign policy is determined by the federal government, not state parliaments, and it remains unclear if the AfD can form a government. The CDU received 17.2%, while other parties including the SPD and Greens trailed behind.
