Germany's far-right AfD party won a historic victory in Saxony-Anhalt's regional election with 43.8% of the vote, yet failed to secure an absolute majority in the state parliament. The result more than doubles the AfD's 2021 score, earning 39 of 83 seats. Lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund ruled out a minority government, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU slumped to 17.2% from 37.1%. Turnout reached a post-reunification record of 77.8%, up from 60.3% in 2021. The SPD, Greens, and Left each took under 10%, while the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance entered parliament with 5.3%.
