German Poll: Union Drops Below 20% as AfD Extends Record Lead

A new poll shows the Union (CDU/CSU) falling below 20 percent for the first time in nearly five years, while the AfD maintains a record lead. The Union would receive 19.5 percent if elections were held this Sunday, a one-point drop from the previous survey. The AfD remains the strongest party at 29 percent, now leading the Union by 9.5 points, its largest margin ever in this poll. The SPD improved slightly to 12.5 percent, while the Greens stayed at 13.5 percent, leaving the current coalition parties with only 32 percent combined. The Left held at 10.5 percent, the FDP remained below the 5 percent threshold at 4.5 percent, and the BSW rose to 4 percent. The Insa survey of 2,010 people was conducted from September 4-7, 2026.
