Thousands protest AfD in Berlin after Saxony-Anhalt election win

Thousands of people protested in Berlin on Monday evening against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) following its landslide victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, with police estimating the crowd at around 5,000. The demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate passed without incident and included prominent climate activist Luisa Neubauer and lead candidates from the Greens and The Left. Protesters carried banners such as "Fascism is not an alternative" and chanted "All together against fascism!" The AfD won Sunday's election by a wide margin but fell short of an absolute majority, leaving open the possibility of its first state-led government. Germany's domestic intelligence agency has classified the AfD's state branch as "confirmed right-wing extremist," and hundreds also protested in nearby Potsdam.
