Pedro Ayana sworn in as Paraguay's president after Senate ousts Peña
Pedro Ayana was sworn in as Paraguay's new president on Friday following the Senate's removal of Santiago Peña over his responsibility for a banking scandal that left nearly three million depositors without access to their funds. Ayana, 52, promised full compensation for citizens affected by the financial chaos, stating, "Compatriots going through such a difficult situation due to the financial chaos will be compensated in full. We will not leave them alone." He belongs to the same Colorado Party as his predecessor. The Senate unanimously impeached Peña for "poor" performance of his duties amid the collapse of the Ueno bank. Ayana will complete the presidential term that was originally set to end in 2028.
