Paraguay's Senate removes President Peña, places him under house arrest
Paraguay's Senate removed President Santiago Peña from office on Friday, finding him guilty of misconduct linked to a banking crisis that left nearly 3 million depositors without access to their funds. He was subsequently placed under house arrest. The Senate voted unanimously, with 44 of its 45 members present, to convict Peña for "poor performance of his duties" and dismiss him from the presidency. Shortly after, prosecutors placed him under house arrest, with charges expected to be formally presented. Prosecutor Silvia Margarita González Wester announced Peña will appear at the prosecutor's office on Saturday at 11:00 local time to face charges including breach of public trust, undue influence for compensation, and abuse of public office for personal gain.
