Paraguay's Senate impeaches President Peña after Ueno Bank collapse
Paraguay's Senate removed President Santiago Peña from office on November 6 following a scandal over the collapse of Ueno Bank, a major financial institution. He was placed under house arrest, and millions of bank clients have lost access to their accounts. All 44 senators present voted for impeachment on charges of dereliction of duty. Peña faces accusations of abuse of trust, influence peddling, and using his office for personal enrichment, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years. The crisis began when the Central Bank took control of Ueno on November 3, affecting about three million customers. The bank reportedly received over $800 million in state funds, including $355 million from a pension fund. Peña previously held a stake in Ueno's parent company and appointed its former head to run the Central Bank. New President Pedro Alliana was sworn in, promising to help return funds to depositors.
