Paraguay's President Impeached and Arrested After Bank Collapse
Paraguay's President Santiago Peña was impeached and arrested on Friday following the collapse of a major digital bank in which he held ownership interests, leaving millions of customers without access to their funds. The Senate rejected Peña's resignation offer and instead impeached him on charges of fraudulent conduct, stripping his presidential immunity. He was subsequently placed under house arrest, with Vice President Pedro Alliana sworn in as interim president until 2028. The bank's collapse has affected over half of Paraguay's population, sparking widespread protests in Asunción. Peña, a close ally of Donald Trump who attended his second inauguration, denies wrongdoing. Alliana has promised full compensation to affected citizens.
