Paraguay's Senate impeaches President Peña over banking crisis; new president sworn in

rtbf.be (French) —

Paraguay's Senate unanimously removed President Santiago Peña from office on Friday, convicting him of "poor performance of his duties" and placing him under house arrest. The impeachment stems from a banking crisis that erupted this week. Peña, whose term was to end in 2028, faces accusations of breach of trust, influence peddling, and personal mismanagement. Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as the new president, pledging full compensation for those affected by the financial chaos. The crisis began Tuesday when the Central Bank seized insolvent online bank Ueno Bank, freezing deposits of nearly three million clients, about half of Paraguay's population. Peña was a shareholder in the bank's parent conglomerate until 2025.
