Paraguay's Ex-President Peña Under House Arrest After Impeachment
Santiago Peña was placed under house arrest on Friday, hours after Paraguay's Senate removed him from office via impeachment related to the Ueno Bank crisis. The former president is detained at his residence following a prosecutor's order in a criminal investigation. Lawmakers accused Peña of using political influence to channel hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds to Ueno Bank, with regulators allegedly overlooking risky internal loans. He denies wrongdoing, while prosecutors investigate breach of trust and other offenses tied to the bank's collapse. The crisis began after Paraguay's Central Bank intervened in Ueno Bank, which served about 2.9 million clients and managed public institutional funds. Vice President Pedro Alliana has assumed the presidency to complete the government term.
