Pedro Alliana sworn in as Paraguay's president after Santiago Peña's house arrest over bank Ueno collapse

nrc.nl (Dutch) —

Pedro Alliana has been sworn in as Paraguay's new president after the Senate unanimously removed Santiago Peña, who is now under house arrest for his alleged role in the collapse of bank Ueno. Peña must report to prosecutors over the failure of Ueno, a major bank serving roughly half of Paraguay's 6.5 million citizens. Alliana, Peña's former vice president and party colleague, is also under investigation, along with several ministers. The Central Bank intervened in Ueno this week due to creditworthiness concerns and political elite ties, freezing accounts and sparking mass protests. Peña resigned Thursday, but the Senate rejected it to enable prosecution. Alliana has promised compensation, with advance repayments already underway.
