Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Arrested in Asunción

g1.globo.com (Portuguese) —

Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was arrested in Asunción immediately after the Senate concluded the trial that removed him from office, on charges related to fraudulent management in the Ueno bank scandal. The arrest warrant was issued by four prosecutors and executed by federal police at Peña's home. Police official Cristian Benítez stated the preliminary charges include specific crimes, though the Public Ministry must still determine the exact facts and circumstances of each offense. Peña had declared Ueno Holding shares worth 6.144 billion guaranis in 2023, selling them in April 2025. His brother is a partner in U Holding SARL, the company allegedly controlling Ueno Bank. A new parliamentary complaint on Thursday added three facts to the investigation, including questions about Central Bank oversight and public deposits from institutions like Itaipu and the IPS.
