Pedro Alliana sworn in as Paraguay's president after Peña's removal over bank collapse

ici.radio-canada.ca (French) —

Pedro Alliana was sworn in as Paraguay's president after the Senate unanimously removed Santiago Peña from office over his alleged role in the collapse of Ueno Bank. Peña was subsequently placed under house arrest. Alliana, 52, from the same conservative Colorado Party, pledged full compensation for citizens affected by the financial chaos. The banking crisis began Tuesday when the central bank seized insolvent Ueno Bank, freezing deposits of nearly three million clients, about half of Paraguay's population. Prosecutors accused Peña of abuse of trust, influence peddling, and personal gain, citing his former stake in the bank's parent holding company until 2025. He is scheduled to be questioned Saturday at the prosecutor's office.
