Paraguay's Senate removes President Peña; house arrest follows Ueno Bank scandal

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was removed from office by the Senate and detained at his home following an arrest order from the Public Ministry, amid the Ueno Bank financial scandal. He remains under house arrest at the disposal of prosecutors. The impeachment, completed in two days, found Peña guilty of misconduct linked to the bank's collapse, which affected 850 million dollars in deposits and nearly three million clients. Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as his successor, promising full compensation for affected depositors. Peña's legal team denounced due process violations, while protests erupted in Asunción demanding accountability. The conviction strips him of parliamentary immunity and exposes him to criminal investigations, as authorities also arrested eight Ueno executives and the former central bank president.
