Pedro Alliana becomes Paraguay's president after Senate ousts Peña
Pedro Alliana became Paraguay's president after the Senate impeached and removed Santiago Peña amid a banking crisis, with Alliana serving out the remainder of the term through August 2028. The crisis stemmed from the collapse of digital lender ueno, which left millions unable to access accounts. Alliana, 52, is a longtime Colorado Party leader who achieved his presidential goal two years early after remaining loyal to Peña until Monday, when he suspended his primary bid. He has touted close ties with the United States and firmly backs Paraguay's support for Taiwan and Israel. The political crisis sparked street protests in Asunción and forced the central bank chief's resignation on Tuesday. Alliana previously served a decade in the Chamber of Deputies and as governor of Ñeembucú, and is considered a reserved politician with deep ties to the party establishment.
