Paraguay's Senate impeaches President Peña; Alliana sworn in to complete term
Paraguay's Senate removed President Santiago Peña from office with 44 votes, and Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as the new president. Alliana will complete the presidential term until 2028. The Senate found Peña guilty of misconduct related to the financial crisis at Ueno Bank. The impeachment proceeded after Peña failed to appear before the Senate, despite announcing his intention to defend himself, and his resignation submitted Thursday was rejected by Parliament. The crisis began after the central bank intervened in Ueno Bank, leaving nearly three million clients without immediate access to deposits. The Organization of American States has called for a constitutional resolution, while initial reimbursements to depositors have begun through the central bank's deposit guarantee fund.
