Paraguay court orders ex-president Peña held in pretrial detention
A Paraguayan judge on Saturday ordered former president Santiago Peña held in pretrial detention at a military facility while prosecutors investigate his ties to collapsed digital lender ueno, deepening a political and financial crisis. Peña, charged with breach of trust and administration for personal gain, was detained a day after his removal from office. Prosecutors allege he influenced government agencies to keep public money at ueno despite financial ties, creating a conflict of interest. His attorney says Peña pleads not guilty. Former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo was also ordered detained on similar charges. Peña's ouster brought Vice President Pedro Alliana to power, with each charge carrying up to 10 years in prison.
