Paraguay impeaches and arrests President Peña over banking crisis
Paraguay's President Santiago Peña was impeached and placed under house arrest on Friday following a banking crisis that left millions unable to access their savings. Lawmakers, including from his own party, voted to remove him from office. Peña was charged with misconduct after the collapse of Ueno Bank, which was seized by the central bank, leaving over half the population without access to funds. He denied wrongdoing, but impeachment stripped him of his lifetime Senate seat and ex-president immunity. The charges alleged conflicts of interest, regulatory manipulation, and a cover-up involving the central bank. Peña faces questioning on Saturday, while Vice-President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as interim President, promising full compensation for affected depositors.
