Itaipu files criminal complaint against Ueno Bank directors to recover $163.8 million
Itaipu Binacional filed a criminal complaint on Saturday against Ueno Bank directors to recover $163.8 million held in the Paraguayan institution, whose operations were shut down by Paraguay's central bank. The binational hydroelectric company held $163.8 million in dollar accounts and 115.2 billion guaranis in local currency as of November 3. The complaint alleges fraud, breach of trust, and misconduct against eight former directors, including major shareholder Miguel Vázquez. Paraguayan prosecutors also charged former President Santiago Peña with breach of trust and self-dealing, requesting his preventive detention. Former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo faces similar charges and has been detained since Friday.
