Paraguay's Senate Impeaches President Peña Over Banking Scandal; Alliana Sworn In
Paraguay's Senate impeached President Santiago Peña on Friday over a banking scandal affecting nearly 3 million savers, and Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as his successor. Peña was subsequently placed under house arrest. The Senate unanimously found Peña guilty of "poor performance of duties" linked to the collapse of Ueno Bank, which had its deposits frozen after central bank intervention. Alliana, from the same Colorado Party, promised full compensation for those affected by the financial crisis. Peña, who had resigned Thursday but was rejected by Parliament, faces a criminal investigation for alleged breach of trust and influence peddling. He will be questioned by prosecutors Saturday, while the central bank has begun reimbursing depositors.
