Paraguay's Ex-President Santiago Peña Placed Under House Arrest After Impeachment
Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was placed under house arrest by the country's justice system minutes after being removed from office by the Senate on Friday. He faces formal charges from the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the measure was carried out at his home in Asunción. Peña was formally accused of breach of trust and attempted fraud, with investigators also citing suspicions of illicit enrichment related to the Ueno Bank case. Four prosecutors signed the accusation, and Peña voluntarily allowed his detention at his residence as Vice President Pedro Alliana assumed the presidency. The Senate voted 44-0 to impeach Peña amid a financial crisis involving Ueno Bank, which the Central Bank intervened in after it failed solvency requirements. Peña, a former shareholder in the bank's holding company, had resigned earlier but the resignation was not voted on due to lack of quorum.
