Paraguay charges ex-President Peña over Ueno Bank collapse
Paraguayan prosecutors charged former President Santiago Peña on Saturday with breach of trust and administration for personal gain, linked to the collapse of Ueno Bank that jeopardized millions of savers and triggered a political crisis. Peña faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. A judge ordered his detention at a military base while investigations continue. The bank's collapse on Tuesday froze accounts of nearly three million customers, leading to Peña's impeachment by Congress on Friday. Lawmakers allege Peña steered public funds into Ueno while regulators overlooked risky lending. He denies wrongdoing. The Central Bank said 1.2 million customers received partial or full reimbursement, and a teachers' union plans an indefinite strike Monday.
