Paraguay judge orders ex-president Peña held in pretrial detention
A Paraguayan judge ordered former President Santiago Peña held in pretrial detention at a military facility on Saturday while prosecutors investigate his ties to collapsed digital lender ueno, which has left millions of customers unable to access their accounts. Judge Humberto Otazú issued the detention order after Peña was charged with breach of trust and administration for personal gain, citing the need to ensure he remained in the country during the case. Peña's attorney said his client pleaded not guilty, and former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo was also ordered detained on related charges. Peña was removed from office on Friday, with Vice President Pedro Alliana sworn in to complete his term through August 2028. Prosecutors allege Peña influenced government decisions to keep public money at ueno despite financial ties to the lender, which he has denied.
