Paraguayan ex-president faces prosecutors after impeachment over bank collapse
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was impeached and placed under house arrest Friday after the collapse of Ueno Bank, a digital lender serving over 3 million customers, leaving many without access to their funds. Peña, a shareholder in the bank and a close U.S. ally, was found guilty of malfeasance by the Senate. Prosecutors also accused him of breach of trust. He denied wrongdoing but resigned Thursday, a resignation lawmakers rejected. Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in to complete Peña's term until August 2028, pledging compensation for losses. The central bank seized Ueno Bank Tuesday over solvency issues, sparking protests in Asunción. Peña appeared before prosecutors Saturday.
