Pedro Alliana sworn in as Paraguay's president after banking crisis ousts Pena
Pedro Alliana was sworn in as Paraguay's president on Friday following the impeachment of Santiago Pena, who was removed over a banking crisis that froze accounts for nearly half the country's population. Alliana will serve until 2028. The crisis began Tuesday when the Central Bank seized control of ueno bank, freezing accounts of about 3 million customers. Paraguay's Senate impeached Pena on Friday, declaring him guilty of poor performance in his duties, after protests erupted demanding accountability. Alliana, a former national basketball player and businessman, previously served as vice president for three years. He rose in politics with support from former president Horacio Cartes, and has faced criticism over employing relatives in public administration.
